How to Prepare for Your First Brazilian Wax
So, you’re thinking about getting a Brazilian wax? Well, you’ve found the right place! Contrary to what those dramatic social media videos might have you believing, it’s not as bad as you think. With proper at-home prep, a little help from pain relief methods, and my customized approach, your first Brazilian wax can be a breeze.
How to Prepare at Home
Proper preparation is key to making your Brazilian wax as smooth (pun intended) as possible. Here are some tips to set yourself up for success:
- Exfoliate 2 to 3 Times a Week: Leading up to your appointment, exfoliating is essential. It helps reduce the buildup of dead skin that can cling to hair, making it harder (and more uncomfortable) to remove. Use a gentle scrub or an exfoliating mitt to keep your skin smooth and ready.
- Moisturize Daily: Hydrated skin isn’t just good for your glow—it’s crucial for waxing. Soft, moisturized skin and hydrated follicles allow the hair to slip out more easily, reducing discomfort. Just avoid moisturizing on the day of your appointment to ensure the wax adheres properly.
- Consider Taking Ibuprofen: Some clients find that taking an ibuprofen 30 minutes to an hour before their appointment helps reduce any discomfort. While I can’t personally vouch for this (I’ve never tried it), many clients swear by it.
- Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol Beforehand: These can make your skin more sensitive, so it’s best to skip that latte or happy hour drink before your wax.
- Let Your Hair Grow Out: Your hair needs to be about the length of a grain of rice (1/4 inch) for the wax to grab it effectively. If it’s too short, the wax might not adhere properly, causing it to tug at the hair without fully removing it, which can increase discomfort.
What to Expect During Your Wax
If it’s your first time, don’t worry—I’ve got you. I take my time to make sure you’re comfortable and know exactly what to expect.
- Positioning: Most clients lie in what we call the “butterfly” position, with feet together and knees apart. If that’s uncomfortable, we can adjust. Options include keeping one leg extended at a time or letting your legs hang off the bed.
- For the Butt Strip: To keep things easy and modest, I have clients pull their knees to their chest, so there’s no need to flip over.
- Waxing is not one-size-fits-all, so I adapt my technique to meet your needs. If you need a moment during the process, I’m here for you. I’ll talk you through each strip, letting you know what to expect, and guide your breathing to ease discomfort.
The Wax I Use
For intimate areas, I use hard wax, which is gentler on the skin and great for sensitive areas. My go-to waxes are Emerald from ItalWax for most situations and Suisse Gold from Waxbare for stubborn hairs. These premium products ensure a thorough and effective service while being gentle on your skin.
Let’s Talk Modesty
I know it can feel a little awkward or uncomfortable, but trust me—this is my job, and I see all sorts of lady bits every day. All bodies are unique, but at the end of the day, they all look the same to me professionally. My goal is to make you feel as comfortable and cared for as possible.
Aftercare and Goodies
At the end of your service, I’ll provide a goodie bag to help you maintain your results at home. Here’s what’s inside:
- One Pre-Service Wipe: The same kind I provide before your wax to keep things fresh.
- A Small Bottle of Pre/Post Oil: Infused with antibacterial and antimicrobial tea tree oil, this moisturizing oil is perfect for aftercare.
- An Exfoliating Mitt: For continued exfoliation at home, ensuring the best results between waxes.
Remember, great waxing results start with great home care!
