The Benefits of Regular Waxing
When a waxer recommends coming in every 4 weeks, it’s not just about keeping appointments—it’s about helping you achieve the best possible results. Just like with everything else in life, we need some consistency, or we won't see much of a return.
Ask yourself this: Why am I wanting to get waxed? Did you say “I have a special occasion”, “I don't want to do it myself”, “I love the ease of maintenance”? Well, I'm talking to all of you, but especially to those who really love the idea of being hair-free regularly.
Two of the most common questions I get are, "How often do you recommend coming in?” and “Is it really worth it to come back that often?” Well, let's dive a bit into the science of hair and the benefits of regular waxing.
Our Hair Growth Cycles
Let's begin with the 4 main stages in which our hair cycles:
- Anagen (Growing Phase): This is the active growth phase. The hair shaft is connected to the blood supply through the dermal papilla, which provides all the nutrients hair needs to grow. These hairs are often missed in the first few waxing appointments as they may not have popped out of the skin yet.
- Catagen (Transition Phase): During this phase, the hair shaft detaches from its food source and begins to move upward. This lasts about 1-2 weeks. These hairs are often mistaken as "early regrowth" after your first few waxes, but in reality, they were just too short to be removed during the last waxing session.
- Telogen (Resting Phase): This is the resting stage where the hair is fully formed but no longer growing. It lasts between 6 weeks and 6 months, depending on the body area.
- Exogen (Shedding Phase): This is an extension of the telogen phase, where the old hair sheds and is replaced by new growth.
If you’ve been shaving or stay all natural, your hairs are likely in various stages. During your first few waxing appointments, the hair that we are removing is in the last 3 cycles. By having you come in every 4 weeks, our goal is to sync up and train the follicles to grow in the increments we want. Eventually, we should be able to get your appointments out to 5 or 6 weeks by doing so.
Follicle Damage: The Key to Finer Hair
Every time hair is removed from the root, the follicle experiences mild trauma. Repeatedly waxing the Anagen phase hairs damages the papilla, shrinking the follicle and leading to finer, sparser regrowth. In some cases, the follicle may stop producing hair altogether. We want to get as many hairs in the Anagen Phase as possible with each waxing session.
Varied Results by Individual: Some clients notice these changes within six months, while others may require years of consistent waxing to see significant results, depending on factors like genetics and hair type.
Consistency is Key
If you’ve been waxed before, you’ve likely heard your esthetician stress the importance of staying on a consistent schedule. Here’s why it matters:
- Syncing Growth Cycles: Waxing every 4-6 weeks ensures that most hairs are in the anagen phase, maximizing the benefits of each session. Sporadic waxing disrupts this cycle, leading to uneven results.
- Best Results Over Time: It’s normal not to see perfect results after your first few waxes because your hair cycles haven’t synced yet. Over time, as more hairs are removed in the anagen phase, you’ll enjoy longer-lasting smoothness.
- Avoiding Setbacks: Taking long breaks from waxing allows the hair to rebuild strong roots, making sessions feel like starting over. Staying on schedule prevents this and makes waxing easier and less painful over time.
Additional Benefits of Regular Waxing
- Easier Sessions: As hair becomes finer and less dense, waxing becomes quicker and less painful.
- Fewer Ingrown Hairs: Regular waxing, combined with proper exfoliation and moisturizing, helps reduce the risk of ingrown hairs.
- Smooth, Long-Lasting Results: Waxing removes hair from the root, leaving skin smoother for longer compared to shaving.
- Prevents Coarse Regrowth: Unlike shaving, which cuts hair at the surface and can stimulate coarse regrowth, waxing weakens hair structure over time.
“Whether you’re new to waxing or you’ve been at it for a while, the benefits of staying consistent are undeniable.”
